Relay thefts still proving to be a major player in vehicle crime

Global Telemetrics has warned consumers against complacency with the new 72 plate registrations set to be released on September 1, 2022, reporting an 85 per cent increase in vehicle recoveries compared to 2021.

Last year, Global Telemetrics successfully recovered £23 million worth of vehicles. With £8 million worth of vehicles recovered in the final four months of 2021, this number is set to be far surpassed.

July recovery figures-Layout 1

26 Aug: July 2022 Vehicle Recovery Highlights

The sun has been shining, the heat has been unbearable in places, droughts and hosepipe bans are currently in force but one thing remains ever constant: The Global Telemetrics team will be out whatever the conditions recovering vehicles.

July sticks to the pattern we have seen all year with an increase from 2021. Last July £1.8m of vehicles were recovered, this July has seen just under £2m worth of vehicles recovered for our customers, meaning we are now just £2.1m under the total of 2021 as a whole.

20 5 million

27 Jul: £20.5 Million in recoveries and only half way through the year.

2022 is at its halfway point, a year that has already seen the Winter Olympics, the mass support everyone has shown to Ukraine, Fossils found from the same time as the impact that killed the dinosaurs, Elon Musk buying twitter then possibly pulling out of buying Twitter, Nottingham Forest ending a 23 year exile from top flight football and the UK getting actual points and coming second in Eurovision.

For Global Telemetrics, at the halfway point of the year we are less than £3 million pounds away from matching the total of vehicles recovered for the whole of 2021. In 2021, Global Telemetrics successfully recovered £23 million pounds worth of vehicles. At the end of Quarter 2 for 2022 we are currently at £20.5 million with £8.5m recovered in this second quarter alone.

Chop Shop

15 Jul: Chop Shop located from SmarTrack device

Earlier on in July we had a report to our control centre that our customers’ Range Rover SVR had been stolen. After contacting our control centre armed with their crime reference number our Stolen Vehicle Recovery Team leaped into action and immediately started the process of locating the vehicle.

So far, halfway throughout the year Range Rover’s have made up 60% of all vehicles recovered by Global Telemetrics.

Caravan Tracking Device

14 Jul: Caravan Tracking Device helps police recover more than one vehicle

SmarTrack products have once again been vital in the fight against vehicle theft as the recovery of one tracked caravan has led to 3 other untracked caravans being recovered on the same site.

At the start of July, in the early hours of the morning, our control centre team received a movement notification from one of our customer’s caravans. The team could see that it was moving away from its usual storage unit. Julie at the control centre was quick to call the customer to find out if everything was ok.

Land Rover Discovery

17 Jun: Theft Case Study: Land Rover Discovery

This theft is fairly unique in that it happened in the middle of the day in a residential area in a busy part of Birmingham. Whilst not all thefts happen at night, thefts during the middle of the day are not something that happens all the time. For this unlucky customer his Land Rover Discovery was stolen just after midday on a Sunday afternoon.

15 Jun: Theft Case Study: Fiat Ducato Autotrail Motorhome

There is a myth that if your vehicle is stolen and you don’t get it back within the first 48 hours then you wont get it back at all. Thankfully, this is definitely a myth and not fact and the following case study shows that even after a few days a vehicle can be found and recovered back to a customer.
Sadly, this also means we see a rise in theft numbers for this type of vehicle. This was the case in February where we had a theft and recovery of a Fiat Ducato Autotrail Motorhome in the London area.
