Theft Methods in Q2

At Global Telemetrics, we continue to monitor how and where vehicles are stolen. Keyless theft remains the majority method of theft for vehicles we recover. At the end of Q2, 53% of all vehicles recovered were stolen without the need for a key. 10% of recoveries by Q2 end were either by burglary or car-jacking.

Global Telemetrics currently has a couple of solutions to help combat keyless theft, regarded as the best vehicle trackers in the UK:

  • Our S5 tracker devices (that have Bluetooth Detection Cards) will be provided with a Faraday pouch to put both the keys and cards into. This stops the key signal from being able to be relayed.
  • Our SmarTrack S5+ iMOB system (that comes with Bluetooth Detection Cards) can be switched off. Once switched off or out of range, the tracking device will immobilise the vehicle. This means that even if the keys have been replicated in a relay attack, the vehicle will still not start.

Throughout the year so far, we have had many reports of attempted thefts which have not been able to happen thanks to the SmarTrack S5+ iMOB system. Recently our customer was alerted to thieves attempting to steal their Aston Martin DBX. Doorbell footage captured the thieves walking around the property amongst other vehicles belonging to the family. They were able to get into the DBX and turn the ignition on, but were unable to start the car and eventually moved on. Footage of the criminals trying to gain a signal can be seen below:

Locations in Q2

At 81%, customer’s home addresses are the most likely location for a vehicle to be stolen from, public car parks are second and workplaces third. At 37%, London continues to be top when it comes to where vehicles are stolen from, with Kensington and Chelsea being the most common boroughs so far this year. The West Midlands, with 20%, is the second most popular location and third with 9% is Lancashire.

Fastest Recovery

Exclusive to Global Telemetrics, part of our team is the UK’s longest-running Auto-Crime Investigation Repartiations Team, who liaise with the police to secure stolen vehicles safely and quickly until the police can attend or release them back to customers. Over the years, we have found this significantly speeds up the speed at which vehicles are recovered back to customers. Q2’s fastest recovery was a Ford Ranger being located, secured and recovered in just 11 minutes.

Looking forward

In Q3, Global Telemetrics will be supporting our friends Exec Spec at Yiannimize Live in Leicester on the 18th August, you can find members of our team on their stand at the event, we will be covering the event across our social media channels.
