Rolls Royce caught in a jam!

It’s not often you get the call to say it’s time to locate and find a car with the initials RR and it’s a Rolls Royce not a Range Rover, but this is exactly what happened to Chris in our Secure Control Centre at the end of September.

Around 3am in the morning, Chris took a call to say that the customers property had been broken into and their security gates smashed open. As a result, thieves had stolen the customers Rolls Royce Cullinan.

When it comes to such a vehicle, time is of the essence. With a lot of thefts, such as that of a Range Rover, thieves will move the car to somewhere not too far away and leave it for a few days, usually in a residential area. This is to monitor whether anyone comes to get it, thus indicating it has a tracking device. With a Rolls Royce it’s a lot more suspicious to leave it parked somewhere, especially when it’s a rarely seen on the road £300k Cullinan model. A fact later compounded by a friend of the customer spotting the vehicle driving around in the morning.

Evidently, the thieves also knew this was likely to have a tracker and immediately turned on a jamming device when in the vehicle. The battle was on.

As standard process dictates, Chris asked the customer to report the theft to the police and obtain a crime reference number. Whilst this happened Chris prepped our Repatriations Team with the information ready for them to move as soon as the location became available.

In the event of a theft of an asset the following process will occur:

  1. Customer will report their vehicle stolen on our dedicated theft line/Global Telemetrics will ring the customer to make them aware of one of the alerts that our system generates (Vehicle moving without ignition, Battery disconnected, Driver Detection not present)
  2. If not already obtained, customer will be advised to ring the police and obtain a crime reference number
  3. Global Telemetrics work with our agents who work alongside the police to secure your asset. Upon a receipt of crime reference number, agents will attend the location of your vehicle
  4. As a safety precaution, upon notifying Global Telemetrics of a theft all access to our apps is temporarily disabled. We will keep the owner informed of any updates so they can rest assured everything is in hand. Global Telemetrics will not provide customers with an exact location of the asset to avoid customers endangering themselves
  5. When the vehicle is secured, Global Telemetrics will call the customer to confirm that the vehicle is safe
  6. The police will arrange with the customer collection of the vehicle either from its location or after recovery and forensic examination

Over the period of the night and into the morning our team worked on providing our Repatriation Team a location, the jamming device made this not a straight forward recovery, and locations were checked alongside the police and police helicopter, all to no avail.

Strangely, this vehicle actually had 2 trackers on it, a finance device and the customers own tracker. Liaising with the finance company, they had received a notification that a HPI check had been done on the vehicle. This meant the thieves were trying to sell it and make a quick getaway!

Even though both devices had been jammed by the thieves, our Stolen Vehicle team stepped up, armed with their years of expertise and knowledge and set about bypassing the jammer and gaining a location.

With the location in hand, our Repatriations Team and the Police headed to the scene, where they were able to secure the vehicle. An elated and relieved customer was able to head to the location to meet with our team and take his Rolls Royce back home.
